Sixth ville jeg tro viser til sixth form. «till he clung precariously to the
sixth» betyr antagelig at han hadde nådd grensen for sine intellektuelle
evner men klarte å forbli i klassen ‘by the skin of his teeth’. OED sier om
‘sixth form’: One of the numbered classes into which the pupils of a school
are divided according to their degree of proficiency. Så der har vi det.

Hva betyr det når det står:

on the classical side: linje for klassiske språk/studier?
clung precariously to the sixth: betyr dette at man risikerte å «dumpe»,
altså sto på vippen, så vidt klarte seg gjennom?
