Begrepet gjelder tydeligvis ikke bare filmproduksjon. Oxford Dictionary of
New Words sier følgende:
authoring: the process of creating or compiling multimedia documents or
page layouts for electronic publishing.
When the first practical MULTIMEDIA compilation packages began to appear in
the mid eighties, people were faced with finding a simple term to describe
the process of creating a document which might contain graphics, sound,
animation, and video in addition to text; all of tehse could be linked
together by hypertext links to create a non-linear document which the user
could browse at will. The terms PROGRAMMING and COMPILING, though not
entirely inappropriate, were not really the right words (and in any case
already had specific meanings in computing), nor was WRITING, because
origination of text was only sometimes involved. The new word AUTHORING,
first seen in 1985, seemed a better fit and is now the standard term; it is
also frequently used attributively, as in «authoring system», «authoring
package», «authoring tools» and «authoring software». The term «authoring»
is also used for the process of creating complex page layouts for
electronic publishing and is applied attributively to the systems involved
in this.
Ex.: In order to profit from the possibilities of hypertext, teachers have
to be provided with powerful authoring environments which allow them to
create complex hypertexts while concentrating fully on the contents and
didactic aspects.

Jeg har problemer med uttrykket ‘authoring’ i forbindelse med
filmproduksjon, eller kanskje det er riktigere å si ‘å lage film’ på
DVD-plate. Fra datahold foreslås det ‘programmering’, noe jeg ikke føler
meg helt vel med. Dessuten må jeg bekjenne at jeg ikke helt ser den subtile
(?) forskjellen mellom ‘authoring’ og ‘editing’ i denne sammenhengen. I
konteksten nedenfor kunne jeg kanskje komme unna med å la de to begrepene
smelte sammen, men da er problemet der like fullt neste gang det blir snakk
om ‘authoring’ .
